The Symptoms of
Being Overweight
Your weight is an indicator of your general state of health.
Sudden changes in your weight, whether it is weight gain or
weight loss, could be related to medical problems. For
instance, sudden and unexplained weight gain could be the
result of pregnancy, edema, premenstrual bloating, nephrosis,
cirrhosis of the liver, reaction to foods or an obstruction in
the lymph. So, any drastic change in your weight must be
medically investigated.
However, in most people, weight gain is not related to any
of the above reasons. It is just the natural result of eating
calories in excess of what the body expends. These calories are
converted into fat.
Most people generally experience the symptoms of weight gain
at certain times:
- Post pregnancy
- Post surgery
- Holiday season
- Winters
- After a vacation
- Post wedding
Except for pregnancy and surgery, where weight gain is a
natural process and may even be recommended, the other
occasions clearly pertain to over indulgence.
Symptoms of weight gain are not very apparent, unless you
are paying close attention to your body every day. The first
sign of weight gain is the difficult fit of your clothes. The
moment you find that you are unable to zip into favorite pair
of figure-hugging jeans, it is time to do some serious calorie
control.
Other symptoms of weight gain include general feelings of
heaviness, lethargy, sluggishness and difficulty in
concentration. As you put on weight, you will find it more
tiring to carry out normal activities like climbing stairs,
carrying groceries home or taking the dog for a walk.
In some women, water retention just prior to the menstrual
cycle or before menopause can lead to weight gain. You may
notice swelling in the extremities, in which case it is better
to discuss the matter with your doctor.
In these days, when a huge percentage of the population
enjoys sedentary jobs and biting into calorie rich food, it is
important to pay attention to the symptoms of weight gain.
Aesthetics apart, weight gain is always accompanied by health
problems. It is easy to reverse weight gain in the early
stages. But, as you become heavier, it becomes that much more
difficult to shed excess weight.
