How to Maintain
a Healthy Weight
Many people who want to lose weight set their target weight
without giving it too much thought. They just pull out a number
from thin air. Others tend to diet and exercise until they
become gaunt and pale. Both of these techniques are flawed.
Before you begin to lose weight, it is important to be aware
of the body weight that is healthy for you. The right weight
varies from person to person and depends on a number of factors
like age, sex, height, level of physical activity and
illnesses. Most weight tables base their numbers on age, height
and sex. So, if you are a male below 25, over 6.2’ in height,
your healthy weight will be more than that of a 30 year old
5.1’ woman in her forties!
Another, more accurate way to calculate your healthy weight
is to calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI). Many websites have
an online calculator that helps you find this magic number
immediately. Your healthy body weight needs to be within the
recommended percentage.
Once you reach your healthy weight, your next step is to
work towards maintaining it. Maintaining a healthy weight is
not difficult if you look at it as an ongoing process. Here are
certain steps you can follow to maintain your healthy
weight:
Eat healthy: This is the first step. Do not
skip meals. Fresh fruits and vegetables generally contain fewer
calories. Besides, they are good for you. Make sure that you
eat 4-5 servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Beware of
canned fruits. These may contain sugar.
Drink healthy: Research shows that though
many dieters reduce their food intake, they do not pay
attention to the colas, juices and carbonated drinks that go
in. These are generally very high in calories and can make you
put on weight immediately.
Comfort foods: Comfort foods are not taboo,
but have them in moderation. So, 2-3 spoons of ice cream are
alright, but a tub of your favorite ice cream is certainly off
limits. Eat foods you love at least once in a while.
Eat small portions: Some people find that
they get hungry faster. If that is the case, eat small portions
and increase the number of times you eat.
The above tips will help you maintain your healthy weight
through healthy practices.
